QRI-5 is an informal reading inventory that helps the examiner assess when the student understands the text that he’s reading, as well as his word-identification skills, and where the student has difficulty. The basic format is that it gives word lists, with a lot of non-sight words, and then there are passages for the student to practice from, after which there are tests for comprehension. Through QRI-5 one can identify students’ word identification level, their comprehension level, and their ability to read different types of texts. As the student moves through the levels it is simple to document his growth. As teachers, we are constantly assessing our students to make sure that they are on the level they should be, the level determined by the common core standards put together by P12. After reading and familiarizing myself with the common core standards of a fourth grader, I understand what assignments are needed to properly assess my students to know if they are on the same level as their grade-mates nationwide.   In the third ELA lesson starter, the teacher wanted to develop, implement and help her students communicate new ideas to others through original writing. She told her students to create a beginning to a story and record it on a podcast. She then gave the story to other students and had them create an end to that story. By giving her students this assignment, she was able to test for two of the common core standards. T he videos and notes in “Reading 101: what you should know”, explain the 10 important parts of teaching reading and writing and how to teach each of them. There were many interesting things that I learned and I got many awesome ideas that I plan on incorporating into my classroom. The first idea I learned was about print awareness, meaning the understanding of print. The way a child learns what letters and words are is through the knowledge that the lines and squiggles on papers are really words and ways to communicate with others. I learned how important it is for parents to expose their children to the alphabet and reading from a young age so they can develop the understanding and love of print. As well, f rom when a child is about a year old they can distinguish between many sounds in their native language. By talking to a child you are building up their repertoire of the sounds that make up speech and enabling them to differentiate between the different sounds. The next...
