week 3 assignment 2

As teachers, we are constantly assessing our students to make sure that they are on the level they should be, the level determined by the common core standards put together by P12. After reading and familiarizing myself with the common core standards of a fourth grader, I understand what assignments are needed to properly assess my students to know if they are on the same level as their grade-mates nationwide.

In the third ELA lesson starter, the teacher wanted to develop, implement and help her students communicate new ideas to others through original writing. She told her students to create a beginning to a story and record it on a podcast. She then gave the story to other students and had them create an end to that story. By giving her students this assignment, she was able to test for two of the common core standards. She tested if they can write narratives clearly, with detail and in clear sequence, and if they can use technology with support from adults. This assignment is good for all students, on any reading level- of course, they would be expected to create a level-appropriate story. Through this assessment a teacher can see in which areas her students may be behind their grade-mates.

week 13 A1

I learned many things from the videos we watched, but the most important one is that if you get your students motivated and eager to learn a new language their eagerness will give their mind wings and they will have an easier time learning it. It’s also important to have your students’ parents involved in the process, in one video the school helped parents who themselves didn’t know English learn how to help their children learn the English language. One of the parents said, “I learned that my child can read any book, even if it’s meant for younger kids. As long as he’s reading, he’s in a good place.” Before you begin to work with a student, aside from assessing their English knowledge, assess them for their knowledge in their native language. This will help you understand where the student is holding, it will tell you if he is at grade level in the other language. Once you know where he is holding you can teach him what he needs to know; and then, of course, assess him again at...

week 5 A4

After listening to Mary read and retell the passage she read "whales and fish", I now know her strengths and what she needs help with. Mary read 195/ 198 words correctly, but she didn't read the words in phrases, rather she read it word by word and occasionally two or three word phrases. So although Mary read the words correctly and she scored 45.5 on her accuracy she is a 1 on the prosody scale and she needs help with that. After Mary finished reading and her teacher asked her to explain what she read, Mary was able to retell the main ideas in the story as well as the detail.
