week 3 assignment 3

QRI-5 is an informal reading inventory that helps the examiner assess when the student understands the text that he’s reading, as well as his word-identification skills, and where the student has difficulty. The basic format is that it gives word lists, with a lot of non-sight words, and then there are passages for the student to practice from, after which there are tests for comprehension. Through QRI-5 one can identify students’ word identification level, their comprehension level, and their ability to read different types of texts. As the student moves through the levels it is simple to document his growth.

There are two ways that QRI-5 identifies if the student comprehends what he read- through having the student retell the story and through asking the student questions. Although I don’t know what the assessments are called, this is my first time learning formally about reading assessments, I have seen many teachers in real life using this tool to see if their students comprehend what they read.

I think that QRI-5 is a great way to see what level your student’s reading is on, and I look forward to learning about it more.

week 13 A1

I learned many things from the videos we watched, but the most important one is that if you get your students motivated and eager to learn a new language their eagerness will give their mind wings and they will have an easier time learning it. It’s also important to have your students’ parents involved in the process, in one video the school helped parents who themselves didn’t know English learn how to help their children learn the English language. One of the parents said, “I learned that my child can read any book, even if it’s meant for younger kids. As long as he’s reading, he’s in a good place.” Before you begin to work with a student, aside from assessing their English knowledge, assess them for their knowledge in their native language. This will help you understand where the student is holding, it will tell you if he is at grade level in the other language. Once you know where he is holding you can teach him what he needs to know; and then, of course, assess him again at...

week 5 A4

After listening to Mary read and retell the passage she read "whales and fish", I now know her strengths and what she needs help with. Mary read 195/ 198 words correctly, but she didn't read the words in phrases, rather she read it word by word and occasionally two or three word phrases. So although Mary read the words correctly and she scored 45.5 on her accuracy she is a 1 on the prosody scale and she needs help with that. After Mary finished reading and her teacher asked her to explain what she read, Mary was able to retell the main ideas in the story as well as the detail.
