I
assessed one of my students who is in the beginning of kindergarten and is 5
years old. Since she is just beginning to read, her fluency isn’t so high, so
that I let be.
When I
assessed her for print awareness, she was able to hold a book the right way, she
knew what the front cover and the back cover were, and she knew what direction
she should read from. My student was also able to identify the letters of the
alphabet, although she could not tell me what the title and author of the book
were. For this I would suggest that the parent or teacher read to her; there is
also an online source- see below- where she can play and practice to pick up
the things she didn’t know before.
When I
pronounced a word to my student she couldn’t retell all the sounds that she
heard; for example when I said “book”, she said it starts with ‘b’ and ends in ‘k’,
but she couldn’t tell me what the middle sound was. I would suggest several
games for her to do, such as a silly sing song game where we change the first
letter of each word, or like the kindergarten teacher in the video did with a lion
where he left out a sound, and the children must tell you what sound is missing.
In
phonics, my student did well for her age and grade, she was able to sound out
many of the words we learned, and with practice she will be able to build up
her level in decoding words. I would suggest that she reads and practices sheets,
as well as some online activities, see below.
Since my student just began to learn how to
read, her pace is still slow. I would give her a story to read over and over
again, so with time she can gain speed.
I would suggest that my student
goes online to starsfall.com and there practice using the talking library for
print awareness, “more phonics” to help her with understanding and manipulating
syllables, and she read the short books for her fluency and practice with
phonics.
Repeated reading is a great way to increase speed and develop fluency. You're right; your student will definitely benefit from this practice.
ReplyDeleteGreat assessment and recommendations! Using talking libraries from Starsfall.com is a super way to develop her print awareness!
